This summer I was given a great opportunity to climb a 14,000 foot mountain for my summer internship with Lincoln Industries. Lincoln Industries is a large-scale manufacturer of finishing-intensive products and serves a national customer base right out of Lincoln, Nebraska. During my wellness internship this summer I have had the opportunity to health coach six individuals, setting short-term, as well as long term goals while meeting on a weekly basis.
The wellness program at Lincoln Industries is one above the rest. Each year, people who are ‘Platinum Fit’, based on their health and wellness assessments, have the opportunity to climb a 14,000 foot mountain in Colorado on an all expense paid trip. This year’s mountain was Quandary Peak with an elevation of 14,265 feet. 132 people took on the challenge.
It was an early morning as we woke up at 3:30 am to eat breakfast in order to leave the hotel, get to the mountain, and start our climb by 5:00 am. With our camelbacks on and flashlights in our hands we began our 7 mile round trip trek. Making our way through the rocky terrain, never ending incline and increasing altitude I finally reached the summit at 7:00 am. The wind was chilly but the view was breathtaking. After taking pictures and refueling with beef jerky and trail mix it was time to head back down the mountain. You might think that climbing up the mountain would be the most difficult part but I would almost say going down was worse. Trying to not slip or fall the never ending decline you have to have your ‘brakes’ on the entire way down. Regardless, I made it down the mountain safely.
A lot of planning and work goes into this trip each year but everyone at Lincoln Industries enjoys this huge reward and look forward to climbing their next mountain. I am so glad I got the opportunity to be a part of this special day. Climbing a mountain with the great people from Lincoln Industries was one of the best experiences of my life! I can definitely say that this was not my last 14er!
