It’s March! You know what that means: warmer weather is in the near future! Okay, so probably not 70 and 80 degree days quite yet, but even 40 degrees feels warm now compared to the single digits we have been seeing this winter. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of this cold weather. I don’t even want to leave my house to go to work or run errands when it’s this cold outside, let alone go for a run in it! But cold weather should never be an excuse to not get in at least some kind of a workout, whether it’s at the gym, at home, or braving the elements. Getting in some exercise always makes me feel refreshed even if I didn’t feel like it.
On these cold days, a lot of times I think, “What would be the benefit for me if I went worked out in this weather?” Well, I guess quite a bit. Studies have shown that being physically active for 30 minutes at least 5 days per week can help control weight, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, reduce the risk of some cancers, strengthen muscles and bones, improve mental health and mood, improve your ability to do daily activities and reduce falls, and increase your chances of living a longer life. Wow! I don’t know about you but, I think I can squeeze in 30 minutes into my day to get some physical activity even if it is cold.
Since it’s the beginning of March, now is a perfect time to lay out a physical activity plan and goal that you want to accomplish during the month of March. We still might have a few more cold days before warm weather is here to stay, but don’t let that stop you from starting now or reaching your goal. With the FEW cold days we have left, I am going to keep a good mindset that warmer weather will be here and soon I can go out running in shorts and a t-shirt.
So, what are you waiting for?! Make a daily, weekly, or monthly goal and kick-start your way to a new healthy habit! Remember, getting 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days per week can boost your health and add years to your life!
