This month kicks off our Lighten Up! campaign, which is all about developing healthful eating habits. On top of managing how much you eat, it’s hugely important to stay focused on what you eat. Loading up on whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables is essential for maintaining a healthful, balanced diet.

This month, your challenge is to spend a week snacking on vegetables. Whenever you would normally bust out the snack crackers, candies or popcorn, grab some vegetables instead. Snacking on vegetables is an awesome habit to start because 1. it gets you eating more of the good-for-you foods you need and 2. it replaces those often empty, extra calories in your daily diet with vitamins and nutrients (and quite often only a few calories.

Since I started tracking my calories with MyFitnessPal, I couldn’t believe how many of those snacks I loved were loaded with tons of calories (well, I could, but I didn’t want to admit it). What always gets me are the portion sizes. They don’t tell you how many calories are in half a bag of chips. They tell you what’s in 12 chips. Once you do the math it makes you start to reconsider some of your eating habits. And on top of how many calories are in “junk food”, it never seems to fill me up. I just eat more and more of it or end up eating a real meal to feel full.
